Australia’s Pacific coast is one of those places that still feels like a well-kept secret. From the golden stretches of northern New South Wales up through Queensland’s tropical islands, there are beaches and islands here that are perfect for families who want beautiful water without the crazy crowds of Bali or Fiji.

Here are some of my favourite family-friendly spots along the Australian Pacific coast:

1. Byron Bay & surrounds

Iconic, but head just a little further to quieter beaches like Lennox Head or Broken Head. Safe swimming, rock pools for the kids, and that laid-back vibe.

2. Lord Howe Island

A UNESCO World Heritage site just a short flight from the mainland. Crystal clear lagoons, snorkelling with turtles, and almost no cars. It feels like a mini Pacific paradise right on Australia’s doorstep.

3. Fraser Island (K’gari)

The largest sand island in the world. Drive on the beach, swim in freshwater lakes, and spot dingoes (from a safe distance!). Perfect for a multi-day family adventure.

4. The Whitsundays

Whitehaven Beach is world-famous for a reason — that pure white silica sand and turquoise water. Day trips or bareboat charters are very family doable.

5. Port Douglas & the Daintree

Where the rainforest meets the reef. Easy access to the Great Barrier Reef for gentle snorkelling, plus beautiful beaches right in town.

Practical tips from someone who’s travelled a lot with kids:

Pack reef-safe sunscreen and rash shirts.

Book island transfers and reef trips in advance during school holidays.

Many of these spots have excellent family accommodation with kitchens so you can self-cater and save money.

Have you been to any of these? Which one is on your list?
