Kia ora, I’m Greg from Moana Compass.
French Polynesia is pure magic — warm turquoise lagoons, dramatic volcanic peaks, and that genuine Polynesian welcome that makes you feel like family. After spending time there and helping many families plan their trips, here’s my practical guide to the best islands and things to do.
1. Tahiti – The Gateway
Start here. Visit the bustling Papeete market, hike to waterfalls, or relax on black-sand beaches. It’s the perfect place to recover from the long flight from LA and get your bearings.
2. Moorea – The Heart-Shaped Island
Just a short ferry ride away. Famous for its pineapple plantations, shark and ray feeding excursions, and stunning viewpoints like the Belvédère lookout. Great for families — safe lagoons and easy activities.
3. Bora Bora – The Icon
The one everyone dreams about. Overwater bungalows, crystal-clear lagoon tours, snorkelling with colourful fish, and sunset dinners. It’s romantic, luxurious, and surprisingly family-friendly if you choose the right resort.
4. Huahine & Raiatea/Taha’a
For something more authentic and less crowded:
Huahine – ancient temples, vanilla plantations, and quiet beaches.
Raiatea & Taha’a – sacred islands, pearl farms, and some of the best snorkelling in the world.
5. Rangiroa & the Tuamotus
For the adventure seekers — world-class diving with sharks, atolls, and untouched lagoons. Perfect if you want to feel like you’re at the edge of the world.
My Top Tips for Families:
Combine 2–3 islands max so you’re not rushing.
Book lagoon tours and shark/ray feeds — the kids will talk about it for years.
Leave plenty of “do nothing” days — just swimming in the lagoon is magic.
French Polynesia rewards those who slow down and embrace island time.
