Guide to Great South Pacific Cruises – From Tahiti to New Zealand and Beyond

Kia ora, I’m Greg from Moana Compass.
There’s something special about experiencing the South Pacific by sea. The gentle roll of the ship, waking up to a new island on the horizon, and having time to truly unwind instead of rushing between airports. After years of helping families and couples plan Pacific journeys, I’ve seen how a well-chosen cruise can be the highlight of the entire trip.
Here’s my practical guide to making the most of South Pacific cruises:
1. Best Routes for First-Timers
The classic Tahiti & French Polynesia itineraries are hard to beat. 7–10 night cruises often visit Bora Bora, Moorea, Huahine, and Raiatea. You get overwater bungalows, snorkelling with rays, and that famous Polynesian welcome without the stress of multiple short flights.
2. Longer Voyages with Real Adventure
For those wanting more, look at cruises that continue from Tahiti or Fiji toward New Zealand, or island-hop through the Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga, and Vanuatu. These longer sailings give you a real sense of the vast Pacific and the different cultures along the way.
3. Family-Friendly vs Adults-Only
Many lines now offer excellent kids’ clubs and family cabins, especially on longer itineraries. If it’s just the two of you, smaller boutique ships or adults-focused sailings can feel more romantic and peaceful.
4. What to Look For
Smaller ships (under 300 passengers) usually give a more intimate island experience.
Check included excursions — some lines have great cultural tours and snorkel stops.
Consider the season: May to October is generally drier and more comfortable in this part of the Pacific.
5. My Personal Tip
The best cruises are the ones that leave breathing room. Days at sea let you process the beauty you’ve just seen, while port days feel exciting rather than exhausting. I always help clients choose itineraries that match their energy and curiosity.
If you’re thinking about adding a South Pacific cruise to your trip from North America, I’d love to build it into a full custom itinerary — whether it’s a short Tahiti loop or a longer voyage ending in New Zealand or Australia.
