How to Plan the Perfect Family Multi-Island Hopping Trip in the South Pacific

Kia ora, I’m Greg from Moana Compass.

One of the most common questions I get is: “How do we do a multi-island trip with the kids without it becoming stressful?”

After helping many North American families plan exactly this journey (and doing it myself with my own crew), here’s my practical step-by-step guide to making it smooth, fun, and unforgettable.

1. Choose the Right Starting Point

Most families from the US west coast start in Tahiti (short direct flights from LA). It’s the perfect gateway — warm, welcoming, and easy to recover from the long flight with kids.

2. Decide Your Island Hopping Style

Relaxed pace (recommended with kids): 2–3 islands max (e.g. Tahiti → Moorea → Bora Bora)

Adventure pace: Add Fiji, Cook Islands, or even Vanuatu/New Caledonia

Extended trip: Finish in New Zealand or Australia for a big contrast (island calm → city energy)

3. Best Time to Go

May to October is generally drier and more comfortable. School holiday dates matter — many families aim for the June/July or September/October breaks.

4. Booking Order That Works Best

Flights first (LA → Tahiti is the biggest leg), then inter-island flights or ferries, then accommodation. I always recommend leaving buffer days between islands so you’re not rushing.

5. My Top Family Tips

Pack light and bring reef-safe sunscreen, snorkel gear, and a good hat.

Choose resorts or villas with kids’ clubs or shallow lagoons.

Build in “down days” — kids (and parents) need time to just play on the beach.

Local experiences beat big tours: coconut husking, village visits, or learning to weave with pandanus leaves.

Planning a multi-island family trip can feel overwhelming with all the flight connections, ferry schedules, and accommodation options. That’s exactly why I offer custom itineraries — I handle the logistics so you just enjoy the magic.

2. Shorter Facebook / Instagram version (ready to post)

Planning a family multi-island hopping trip in the South Pacific from LA (or anywhere in North America) doesn’t have to be stressful.

Start in Tahiti’s turquoise lagoons, hop to Moorea or Bora Bora, then add Fiji, the Cook Islands, or even finish in New Zealand for that perfect mix of island calm and city energy.

My top tips after doing this with my own crew:

Keep it to 2–3 islands max with kids

Leave buffer days between stops

Choose places with shallow lagoons and kids’ activities

Pack reef-safe sunscreen and snorkel gear

The secret? Build in plenty of “just play on the beach” time.

I help families turn the dream into reality — handling flights, ferries, and accommodation so you can focus on making memories.
