Kia Orana!

If you’re looking for the perfect family adventure where crystal-clear lagoons, soft white sand, and gentle Pacific breezes come together, French Polynesia is hard to beat. As someone with Rarotongan (Cook Islands) and Bora Bora heritage, I’ve spent years exploring these islands, and I can honestly say there’s no better place to create lifelong memories with your kids.

Island hopping in French Polynesia doesn’t have to be stressful or complicated. With the right pacing and planning, it becomes one of the most relaxed and magical family holidays you’ll ever take.

Why French Polynesia is Perfect for Families

Warm, shallow lagoons ideal for little ones learning to snorkel

Short, scenic flights or ferry rides between islands (no long travel days)

A mix of relaxed beach time and gentle adventures

Safe, welcoming local communities

Plenty of family-friendly bungalows and villas with kitchens

Recommended 12–14 Day Family Itinerary

Days 1–3: Tahiti

Start here for easy arrival. Spend a couple of days adjusting to island time, visiting the markets, and relaxing at your resort. Take an easy lagoon tour or visit the stunning black sand beaches on the east coast.

Days 4–7: Moorea

Just a short ferry ride away. Moorea is the sweet spot for families — calm, shallow lagoons, dolphin and stingray encounters, and easy snorkelling right off the beach. Stay in a family bungalow or garden villa. Kids love the pineapple plantations and the viewpoint at Belvédère.

Days 8–10: Huahine or Raiatea

These lesser-visited islands offer a more authentic Polynesian feel. Huahine has beautiful quiet beaches and a relaxed vibe. Raiatea is the cultural heart of the region and a great base for day trips to Taha’a (the vanilla island).

Days 11–14: Bora Bora

Finish with the iconic one — the postcard island. Even with kids, you can enjoy the famous lagoon in a gentle way. Choose a family overwater bungalow or beach villa. The shallow waters near the motus are perfect for safe swimming and snorkelling.

Practical Tips for Families

Travel light — inter-island flights have strict luggage limits

Book family bungalows or villas with kitchens to save on meals

Bring reef-safe sunscreen, reef shoes, and rash shirts

Air Tahiti flights are the easiest way to hop islands

Consider travel insurance (we partner with trusted providers)

A Personal Note

Watching my own children (and nieces and nephews back in the Cook Islands) light up when they see their first colourful fish or hold a coconut fresh from the tree reminds me why I do this. These islands aren’t just destinations — they’re places that connect us to something deeper.
